Quincy Sept 21st 1798

Sir

I have received your favor of the 15th recommending Mr John Pintard to be my private secretary in the place of Mr Malcom resigned.

Mr William Smith Shaw has acted in that capacity with me when at home for more than a year past & has been sometime since appointed & officiateing as successor to Mr Malcom

With great esteem I have the / honor to be &c
