Thile to Wright, October 21, 1865
[Translation.]
In reply to the memorandum of the 4th of April last, the undersigned has the honor to inform Mr. Wright, envoy extraordinary and minister plenipotentiary, that the former Prussian subject, now citizen of the United States, Jacob Carl Breiger, who desires to return temporarily to Prussia on account of family matters, was condemned to a month’s imprisonment or a fine of fifty R.(fifty thalers) by the circuit court of the district of Newstadt, on the 10th of February, 1858, for having left the country with the intention of avoiding the performance of military service. In consideration of the peculiar circumstances of the case, the government will permit the said Breiger a short stay in Prussia, upon the condition that he submits to the judgment which was passed upon him, and he pays besides the costs. It is in this sense that the authorities have been instructed to act.
The undersigned takes this occasion to renew to Mr. Wright the assurances of his most distinguished consideration.
The minister for foreign affairs, by authority,
