Letter

James S. Pike to William H. Seward, June 1, 1864

Mr. Pike to Mr. Seward

No. 135.]

Sir: I have to acknowledge the receipt of your despatches of the 16th and 17th of May, Nos. 153 and 157, and of the highly interesting review of recent military events in the copy of your despatch to Messrs. Adams and Dayton.

The war news down to this date has had no effect upon our securities at Amsterdam, in any way. Our government stocks remain steady at the price they had fallen to a month ago. This fact may be taken as a criterion of the state of opinion in regard to the late military operations of General Grant, so far as they have yet been heard from.

Our dates are no later than those by the Scotia, which brought your despatches.

I have the honor to be, with great respect, your most obedient servant,

JAMES S. PIKE.

Hon. William H. Seward, Secretary of State, Washington.
