CADWALADER, Acting Secretary to Benj. P. Avery, August 14, 1875
No. 178. Mr. Cadwalader to Mr. Avery.
Department of State, Washington, August 14, 1875.
No. 62.]
Sir: Your dispatch No. 69, of the 22d June, in relation to the exhibition of incendiary pictures in the province of Chihli, and to the action which was taken in regard thereto by the foreign consuls at Tien-tsin, and also by the viceroy at Chihli, has been received.
The exhibition of the pictures referred to was sufficient to call for a vigorous remonstrance. The reply and action of the viceroy seem to have been prompt and intended in good faith.
I am, &c.,
JOHN L. CADWALADER,
Acting Secretary.
Acting Secretary.
