HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF THE PACIFIC,

Lieut. Col. L. THOMAS, Assistant Adjutant-General, Army Headquarters, New York: SIR: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of instructions of January 19, and in answer thereto transmit my order of this date, showing that the post at the entrance will be occupied to-day. The companies from the north will be ordered by the first steamer. I am, sir,
