Washburne to P. S.—Monday evening, January 9.—Since waiting the above I have heard of an accident that befel a young American last night, Charles M. Swazor, of Louisville, Kentucky, was struck by a shell in his own room, No 7, Rue Cassimir de la Vigne, Hotel St. Sulpice. The shell burst in the room and a fragment struck his foot and injuring it to such an extent that amputation was found necessary. He was taken to the American ambulance and the operation was performed by Doctors Swinburne and Johnston this afternoon. The patient is doing well. E. B. W, January 9, 1871
