2, Brig. Gen. Benjamin Alvord having, under instructions from the War Department, reported for duty at these headquarters, will proceed to Fort Vancouver and assume command of the District of Oregon.

CAPTAIN: The colonel commanding the district has just received
information that 200 well-armed Indians are now concentrated near the
head (the mouth is evidently intended) of Mad River for the purpose
of attacking Arcata. In order to verify the truth of this report you
are directed to proceed immediately to Arcata, then take one or inore
