Wm. H. Seward to Henri Mercier, May 20, 1862

Mr. Seward to Mr. Mercier.

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 16th instant, relative to the tariff imposed by this government on French silks, and to state in reply that I have communicated the translation of it to the Secretary of the Treasury and invited his attention to the subject.

I avail myself of this opportunity to renew to you, sir, the assurance of my high consideration.
