Sir: I have to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of the 7th instant, in reference to Oortinas crossing the Rio Grande with his forces into Texas, and, in reply, to inform you that your action in laying before M. Drouyn de l’Huys an explanation of the attitude of the government of the United States in this matter meets my approval. No further information on the subject than that contained in my instruction No. 677, of the 10th instant, has yet been received.
