Mr. Seward to Sir F. Bruce

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 3d instant, recalling the attention of this department to the questions contained in your note of the 13th of July, 1866, relative to the adoption by this government of a code of maritime signals now in use by her Majesty’s government, and to inform you, in reply, that I have placed your communication and its accompanying plates of various signal flags before the Secretary of the Navy, with the request that he will furnish this department with such information regarding the subject as is desired by her Majesty’s government.
