Mr. Seward to Mr. Pruyn

No. 56.]

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your despatch of October 15, (No. 67.) The murder of the French lieutenant, Camus, near Kanagawa, as you have described it, lends a new and shocking aggravation to the relations between Japan and the western powers.

I am, sir, your obedient servant,

WILLIAM H. SEWARD.
