Sir: I have received your interesting despatch of the 20th ultimo, No. 198, informing me of your proceeding upon learning of the arrival of Admiral Pareja and his fleet at Valparaiso, and the correspondence which had passed between him and the Chilian government. In reply I have to thank you for the suggestions therein contained, and to inform you that the exercise of your influence in the interest of peace is approved. For more explicit instructions upon the subject, and for your information as to the attitude of the United States in this question, I have to invite your attention to my despatch No. 324, of the 8th instant, and its accompaniments.
