Letter

William H. Seward to George G. Fogg, August 6, 1861

Mr. Seward to Mr. Fogg.

No. 8.]

Sir: Your despatch No. 1, dated 8th July last, has been received. Your account of your interview with Mr. Fay, and of the circumstances of the audience granted you by the government of the republic of Switzerland, is interesting and entirely satisfactory. The sentiments you expressed on that occasion are approved by the President of the United States, and the generous reply made to you by the president of the federal council of Switzerland, as narrated to us in the last despatch of Mr. Fay, has been received with deep emotion. We feel assured that whatever may be the changes of existing relations between us and other countries, Switzerland and the United States will always remain friends.

I am, sir, your obedient servant,

WILLIAM H. SEWARD.

George G. Fogg, Esq., &c., &c., Berne.
