HEADQUARTERS TRANS-MISSISSIPPI DEPARTMENT,

Maj. Gen. RICHARD TAYLOR,

GENERAL: Lieutenant-General Smith directs that so soon as General Banks develops his line of retreat, information should be sent by trusty hands to General Pemberton. Whether Banks’ movements are against Port Hudson or he crosses to the assistance of General Grant, the information would be of great importance to General Pemberton.
