Letter

Vicuña Mackenna to Root, June 27, 1872

[Inclosure G.—Translation.]

Mr. Mackenna to Mr. Root.

Notwithstanding the Central Society for “Lazeretos “has offered to your excellency the most expressive thanks for your excellent article upon the internal organization of “Lazeretos,” and the curing of their patients, this “Intendencia” takes pleasure in multiplying the manifestations of its especial acknowledgments for a service as opportune as charitable. It is truly a great consolation and a distinguished honor for our enlightened capital to excite sympathies so high and so sincere as those which your excellency has contributed, it being worthy of note that this is perhaps the first occasion in which the representative of a friendly nation has proved to our fellow-citizens by especial acts of self-denial, and of work that appeals to the human soul, which it has been the custom hitherto to leave exclusively to toasts and protocols. God guard your excellency.

B. VICUÑA MACKENNA.
