Col. J. H. CARLETON, First Infantry California Volunteers,

SIR: Immediately on your return to the southern district the general commanding the department desires you to send Showalter and party under a competent guard to Fort Y uma, there to be held securely guarded until further orders. The general positively forbids any person not connected with our Army from passing beyond Yuma or crossing the Colorado River without his special permission. All persons approaching the southern frontier of this State will be arrested, and if the commander of the forces is not fully satisfied of their loyalty to the General Government they will be held in confinement.
