Unknown to General Ross, August 7, 1862

Jackson, Tenn., August 7, 1862.

General Ross, Bolivar:

General Logan is mistaken in telegraphing you that the order for the relief of Lawler’s brigade by sending the Twentieth and Twenty-ninth Illinois is countermanded. It was suspended at his suggestion that Lawler’smen were unable totravel. I am just informed that he has asked you

to relieve his men at Toone’s Station. My order was, and is, that he should guard the road from here to Toone’s and use the Forty-fifth for that purpose; and until he can accordingly do so his guard at Toone’s willremain. If his guard is not ees enough, re-enforce it for the prescording to my telegram of last evening. arg ome a a JOHN A. MoCLERNAND, Major-General, Commanding.
