General OC. G. DAHLGREN, La Fayette, Miss. : ;

GENERAL: As your recent command was exercised within limits now embraced within the department under command at present of MajorGeneral Van Dorn, I have been instructed to transmit your valuable repre of the 3d instant to him for his information on many points

As to any expenses incurred by you in the discharge of duties intrusted to you in orders from these headquarters, I am directed to say that if the proper accounts are made out in duplicate and forwarded here, duly certified to that the property was purchased or the expenses incurred as required by the Treasury regulations, they will be promptly approved and orders given for their immediate payment. It may be

well to say that in these accounts care should be taken not to blend expenditures of the subsistence and quartermaster’s departments in the same voucher.

The general is heartily sorry to hear such unpromising accounts of the behavior of the people of Adams County, but trusts the panic will pass by speedily, and the inspirations of patriotism, loyalty, and of the manhood of our fathers will resume full sway, sweeping aside the despicable and cheating promptings of selfishness.
