[Inclosure in No. 698.]
Sir Thomas Wade to Mr. Seward.
Peking, April 22, 1880.
Dear Sir and Colleague: I do myself the pleasure to acknowledge receipt of your letter of the 15th instant. I have since received also copy of the memorandum to which it refers of your conference with the ministers of the Tsung-li Yamên regarding the mixed court at Shanghai.
Both papers having already been brought to the knowledge of our colleagues by yourself, there remains for me, as doyen, the acceptable duty of repeating to you, on behalf of my colleagues and myself, the assurance of our appreciation of the care and industry you have bestowed upon the execution of the task which at our joint request you undertook.
Believe me, &c.,
T. WADE
.
The Hon. G. F. Seward, &c., &c., &c., United States Legation.
