General Schenck to Lord Derby.

My Lord: Referring to your two notes, of the 31st ultimo and the 6th instant, on the subject of granting the astronomers of the United States engaged in observing the transit of Venus the free use of the telegraphic wires in Victoria and South Australia, i beg now to gratefully acknowledge the promptness of Her Majesty’s government in forwarding my application; and i have also to ask your lordship to convey to the secretary of state for the colonies my cordial thanks to the governments of Victoria and South Australia for their ready and cordial compliance with the request of my Government.
