Letter

Robert C. Schenck to Robert C. Schenck, November 7, 1874

No. 256. General Schenck to Mr. Fish.

No. 634.]

Sir: Referring to my last dispatch preceding this, I have now to report that I had a note last evening from Lord Derby, informing me that a telegram has been received by Her Majesty’s secretary of state for the colonies, stating that the free use of their telegraphs has been granted by the governments of Victoria and South Australia to the American astronomers engaged in observing the transit of Venus. I have just sent an acknowledgment to his lordship, expressing my thanks to Her Majesty’s government for their promptness in forwarding my application, and to the colonial authorities for their liberal compliance with the request of my Government.

I inclose herewith copies of Lord Derby’s note and my answer.

You will probably think proper to inform the Secretary of the Navy that the arrangement of the matter is accomplished as he desired.

I am, &c.,

ROBT. C. SCHENCK.
