Partridge to Hamilton Fish, August 22, 1874

No. 61. Mr. Partridge to Mr. Fish.

[Extract.]

No. 194.]

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your No. 116, in relation to the refunding by the Government of the United States to that of Brazil of the money paid by the latter in the case of the Caroline to Mr. Webb, with the inclosed copies of notes and of the receipt by the Brazilian chargé d’affaires, and the correspondence (printed) submitted by the President, May 26, 1874.

These have been duly noted and filed in this legation.

In a conversation some time ago at the foreign office, the minister expressed to me his sense of the high and honorable conduct of this matter by the Government of the United States, and some of the foreign representatives here have spoken to me in the same sense.
