Extract from the speech of Mr. Calhoun, of South Carolina, in the Senate, March 16, 1846.
* * * “The past history of the affair, the fact that it had been frequently offered by us substantially as an ultimatum, added to the fact that 49° was the boundary on this side of the Rocky Mountains, left no doubt on my mind that, if settled by compromise, it must be on that basis.” * * * *The line of 49° the only line admissible.
