Municipal Council of Congleton

At a meeting of the town council of the borough of Congleton, in the county of Chester, held on Wednesday, the 3d day of May, 1865, the following resolution was unanimously passed, on motion of the mayor, seconded by Mr. Alderman Hadfield—

That this council hereby expresses its feelings of extreme sorrow and indignation at the dastardly and cruel assassination of President Lincoln, and desires hereby to show its sympathy with our kindred people, who have been so suddenly deprived of the head of their government, at a time so critical and in a manner so atrocious.
