Sir: Your despatch of February 26, No. 279, has
been received, and I have read with deep interest the paper which
accompanies it. The appeal of the Protestant clergy of France to their
religious brethren of Great Britain on the subject of the civil war of
the United States is so vigorous and just as to deserve the thanks of
the whole American people.
