Sir: Yesterday I gave a large dinner in honor of General Grant, to which were invited the cabinet ministers, the heads of the different parties, the admiral and commanding officers of our fleet, the commanders of all the other vessels of war in the harbor, including the German, French, Italian, and English; and other distinguished persons.
The dinner was followed by a large reception. The previous day I gave a dinner to General Grant which was attended by the court and the diplomatic body.
