XXIV. Maj. Gen. John C. Pemberton having been appointed lieutenant-general by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate, will assume command of the forces intended to operate in Southern Tennessee in addition to the command assigned to him in Paragraph I, General Orders, No. 73, current series.

I. In compliance with instructions received from the War Department, at Richmond, Va., the undersigned this day assumes command

of the Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, including the

forces intended to operate in Southwestern Tennessee. For the present

headquarters of the department will be at Jackson, Miss.
