Letter
George Washington to John Adams, January 20, 1797
Dear Sir,
I have received your letter of the 15th instant, and am happy to hear of your safe arrival in Philadelphia. The affairs of state require our immediate attention, and I trust that your wisdom and experience will guide the nation through these trying times.
The situation with France grows more precarious by the day. I have instructed Secretary Pickering to draft a response to the Directory, though I fear our diplomatic efforts may prove fruitless without a show of strength.
I remain, with the highest esteem and sincere regard,
Your obedient servant,
G. Washington
