Sir: Your dispatch No. 55 of December 23 last has been received. You therein report the death of his excellency Dr. Francisco J. Zaldúa, President of the United States of Colombia, which occurred on the 21st of that month at the executive mansion.

It is the desire of the President that you will suitably convey to the minister for foreign affairs the condolences of the Government and people of the United States with those of Colombia in the affliction which they have been thus called upon to endure by the death of their late lamented President.

You will at the same time take occasion to deliver to the minister for foreign affairs the inclosed note, acknowledging one from Señor Perez of the 26th of December, 1882, announcing also the death of President Zaldúa.
