Mr. Frelinghuysen to Mr. Roldan.

Sir: I have had the honor to receive the note of his excellency Julio E. Perez, of December 26, 1882, wherein he has announced the death of his excellency Dr. Francisco J. Zaldúa, lately President of the United States of Colombia, which occurred at the executive mansion the 21st of that month.

I am directed by the President to convey to you an expression of his own sympathy and that of the Government and people of the United States with the citizens of Colombia for the great loss sustained by them in the death of their late chief magistrate, and to” add that the assurances of amity and good will which are entertained by the new Executive of Colombia toward the United States have been received with much gratification, and are heartily reciprocated.
