HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF THE CUMBERLAND,

August 23, 1863—8.15 p.m. (Received 8.25 p. m.) General THomas, Commanding Fourteenth Army Corps: The general commanding directs that you send a party to cut down the banks and improve the crossing at Barnes’ Ford and the other fords on Battle Creek; also to give the necessary orders for having a floating bridge made.
