Letter

Edwin V. Sumner to William H. Gardner, U.s. Navy, July 29, 1861

HEADQUARTERS DEPARTMENT OF THE PACIFIC,

Capt. WILLIAM H. GARDNER, U.S. Navy, Commanding Navy-Yard, Mare Island, Cal. : CAPTAIN: I have telegraphed to-day to keep the Shubrick in commission, as she may be wanted at any moment for the protection of the coast. I think this application will be granted, and therefore I hope you will think proper to delay dismantling the ship till we get a reply. Very truly, yours,

: E. V. SUMNER,

Brigadier-General, U. S. Army, Commanding.
