Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 11th instant, and to inform you that in consequence of your verbal communication to me on the 10th instant, I announced to Earl Granville by telegraph on that day that the President was prepared to co-operate with Her Majesty’s government in the appointment of a joint commission to determine the boundary-line between the United States and the British possessions in North America from the Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains.

I shall also forward a copy of your note of the 11th instant to his lordship by the first opportunity.

I have, &c,
