E ED. R. S. Canby to Tenth Infantry and Bot. Lieut. Col., Comdg, July 14, 1861
July 14, 1861.
Santa Fé, N. Mex., July 14, 1861. ASSISTANT ADJUTANT-GENERAL, Headquarters of the Army, Washington, D. C.:
SIR: I have the honor to report that there has been no material change in the state of affairs in this department since my report of the Tth instant.
The garrison of Fort Fillmore has been increased to seven companies of infantry and two of rifles, relieving the anxiety that had previously been felt for the security of that post. Under cover of this force the troops and publie property in the interior of Arizona are now being withdrawn. Arrangements are being made as rapidly as possible for the withdrawal of the regular troops and disposition of publie property, as required by the special orders (Headquarters of the Army) of May 17 and June 12, 1861. The organization of the volunteer regiments, particularly the Second (Colonel Pino’s), progresses very slowly.
Our relations with the Comanche Indians and the Fort Stanton Apaches are more satisfactory than they were at the date of my last
Very respectfully, sir, your obedient servant,
Major Tenth Infantry and Bot. Lieut. Col., Comdg.
Fort Buiss, TEx., July 20, 1861.
