GENERAL ORDERS, } HDQRs. DEPARTMENT OF NEW MEXICO, No. 83. f Santa Fé, N. Mex., September 18, 1862. The undersigned hereby relinquishes the command of this department to Brig. Gen. J. H. Carleton, and is gratified in announcing as his successor an officer whose character, services, and experience in this country entitle him to the confidence of the people of New Mexico. In taking leave of the troops he has for some time had the honor to command he desires to leave with them the assurance of his high respect and admiration and his best wishes for their happiness and advancement.
