[510] Sir: I am directed by the President to call your attention to the statement in the Trenton Gazette of the 10th, reproduced in the New York Herald of the 12th, to the effect that a military expedition, in violation of law, is fitting out by parties in New Jersey, and to request that you will take steps to inquire into the same, and, if the statement be true, to arrest *and prosecute the offenders.
