CoLONEL: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt to-day of Special Orders, No. 4, Headquarters Department of Mississippi and East Louisiana, dated Jackson, January 4, 1863.

I have to report that General Gregg’s brigade left for Port Hudson yesterday and the day before. I would further state that the battery of Parrott guns which I was ordered by the lieutenant-general commanding to send to Port Hudson left on the steamer Hodges yesterday.

From latest information I am satisfied the enemy’s transports have
gone up the river. Only seven gunboats between the mouth of the
Yazoo River and Milliken’s Bend.
