Letter

By the President: Wm. M. Evarts to Sir Edward Thornton, October 28, 1879

No. 321. Mr. Evarts to Sir Edward Thornton.

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 22d instant, in reply to one of this Department of the 12th of August last, relative to encroachments by Canadian fishermen within the jurisdiction of the United States, and to express the gratification with which this Department has learned of the prompt attention given to the subject by the Canadian Government. It is hoped that the proposed action of the Canadian authorities will supersede the necessity of any seizures or forfeitures on the part of the United States.

I have, &c.,

WM. M. EVARTS.
