Department of State, Washington, March 7, 1881.
Sir: I have had the honor to receive your note of this day’s date, in which you inform me that the minister of foreign affairs of France has renewed to you the declarations made by his predecessors, and has authorized you to affirm once more the unchangeable resolution of the French Government to maintain the absolutely private and international character of the enterprise of Monsieur de Lesseps.
Thanking you for these renewed assurances, I have the honor, &c.,
