Letter

Bancroft Davis to Friedrich von Gerolt, September 8, 1870

Mr. Davis to Baron Gerolt.

Sir: I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your note of the 29th of August last, inclosing for the information of this Government a copy of a dispatch of that month from the chancellor of North Germany, with the accompanying papers, relating to the alleged secret treaty between Count Bismarck and the French envoy, Count Benedetti; and also a copy of the correspondence which has taken place between his Holiness Pope Pius IX and his Majesty the King of Prussia.

Thanking you for the opportunity thus presented of perusing these interesting papers, I avail myself of this occasion to renew to you the assurances of my very high consideration.

J. C. B. DAVIS.
