On the arrival of the Alabama at this port in August, 1863, I heard that the vessel required calking, and I went on board to see Captain Semmes. I arranged with him to do the work required within a period of five days. I calked her topsides and decks, and when the work was completed, I was paid the sum of forty pounds and fourteen shillings by the paymaster on board the vessel.
