Jonathan Trumbull Sr. was an American politician who served as the governor of Connecticut during the American Revolution. Trumbull and Nicholas Cooke of Rhode Island were the only men to serve as governor of both a British colony and a U.S. state, and he was the only governor to take up the Patriot cause at the start of the Revolutionary War. Trumbull College at Yale University, the town of Trumbull, Connecticut, Trumbull County, Ohio, and Jonathan the Husky the UConn mascot are all named for him. Trumbull was the father of John Trumbull, the noted artist, and Jonathan Trumbull Jr., Governor of Connecticut and Speaker of the United States House of Representatives.

Jonathan Sr Williams informs Benjamin Franklin that he has obtained a new edition of the Common Prayer Book and is sending it via a bearer. He mentions London's resemblance to home and expresses reluctance to travel to France due to the difficulty of the journey, but would consider going if accompanying Franklin. Williams also conveys greetings to Franklin’s son and anticipates Franklin’s visit to London in the summer.
Jonathan Sr Williams informs Benjamin Franklin about difficulties in collecting a bill for expenses related to Franklin's grandson's education, as Dr. Cooper is critically ill and the father is unreliable. He explains the financial arrangements made with family members and mentions a property near Cambridge that might interest Franklin for residence.
